Everybody has been anxious about something in their life. While that is normal, it can become a disorder when it affects the quality of your life. Anxiety disorders are common, affecting about one-third of adolescents and adults. The San Diego anxiety specialists use safe and effective techniques to diagnose the condition to understand the specific disorder you might be enduring to design the best treatment. Also, they help patients understand better about the disease since there have been misunderstandings about anxiety. Let us evaluate some of the least known facts about stress that you might not know.

Anxiety Can Be Genetic

There is a reason why some people can survive a traumatic event and remain seemingly unscathed, while others will develop anxiety disorders over similar events. One thing that has become clear through research is that anxiety temperaments and conditions seem to run in families. Also, some studies have shown that those genetically predisposed to anxiety are more likely to develop anxiety when exposed to a stressful or traumatic event.

There is a Relationship between Anxiety and Depression

Research shows that anxiety can cause or trigger depression. Those who suffer from chronic depression develop signs of stress due to mental exhaustion from depression. Also, those who suffer from chronic anxiety develop depressive symptoms. For example, creating a social anxiety disorder could lead to one making some lifestyle choices like avoiding public places and other people resulting in depression.

Anxiety can Begin in Childhood

Children as young as three years can suffer anxiety. But since they are still developing their verbal skills, they might not indicate that they are worried. However, stress will manifest in other ways like headaches, stomach aches, and behavioral issues. Also, anxiety in children can cause restlessness, avoidance, inattention, and frequent meltdowns. Unfortunately, most of these symptoms are often misdiagnosed.

Anxiety can Become Physical

Many people think of anxiety just as a mental and emotional issue. It causes restlessness, concentration and focusing difficulties, frustrations, and irritability. However, it can also cause physical symptoms like nausea, weakness, dizziness, hot flashes, rapid heart rate, and shortness of breath. Sometimes you can find yourself in an emergency room for a panic attack that manifests like a heart attack.

Anxiety can Result in Anger

This is a familiar but lesser-known fact about anxiety. Remember that when you are worried about an event, you feel powerless over that situation, and you feel like your life is out of control. You can express anger as a natural way to get a sense of control. It is easier to externalize an issue than acknowledge the real problem or deal with it. Additionally, anger can be a sign of depression after suffering chronic anxiety.

Anxiety Increases Your Risk Factors for Complications

Anxiety has been identified as a risk factor in several chronic health complications. Research has linked anxiety to heart disease, gastrointestinal conditions like IBS, chronic respiratory issues like COPD, and substance abuse. However, more research is underway to help understand how your body reacts to anxiety and associates it with your physical health. But it is linked to decreased immunity hence a risk factor for several health complications.

Anxiety is an abnormal response to a stressful event. It only becomes a problem when it affects the quality of your life. You can get in touch with an anxiety specialist to understand more about the condition and how to beat it to safeguard your overall well being.
