Over the years, it’s earned a reputation for selling award-winning wines at very low prices.
And now budget supermarket Aldi has surprised everyone again by being named the best place in the UK to buy beer, wine and spirits.
The discount German chain beat upmarket rival Waitrose and specialist online drinks seller Master of Malt to land the title of Drinks Retailer of the Year at the Drinks Business Awards last night.
Budget supermarket Aldi has won yet another award – this time Drinks Retailer of the Year at the Drinks Business Awards
The awards, held at the London Wine Fair, recognise the retailers that sell the most well-rounded and best quality selection of wines, beers, and spirits in the international drinks industry.
Aldi, which became the UK’s fifth biggest supermarket in January, was praised for improving its drinks offering at its stores over the last year.
A Drinks Business Awards spokesman said: ‘We saw some amazing entries into the Drinks Business Awards this year and the standard was very high.
‘Aldi successfully answered all of our criteria and were without a doubt this year’s Drinks Retailer of the Year.’
The award follows the supermarket’s success at the International Wine Challenge last week, where it won a prize for best value rosé under £8 for its £5.99 Exquisite Collection Cotes de Provence Rosé (right)
Judged by a panel of industry experts, the award follows a successful year so far for Aldi.
The retailer was named Multiple Wine Retailer of the Year by the Drinks Retailing Awards and it also won 41 meals for wines that were crowned best value in their categories at the International Wine Challenge last week.
Last week its £5.99 Exquisite Collection Cotes de Provence Rosé also received an award for being the best value rosé under £8.
Tony Baines, joint managing director of corporate buying at Aldi, said: ‘Customers don’t just have to rely on boutique wine stores for quality drinks nowadays.
‘At Aldi, we make it easy for our customers to shop for quality, award-winning products that won’t break the bank.
‘We have a concise range of beers, wines and spirits on offer.
‘Our UK buying team work hard to ensure each product, which is bought specifically for the UK market, is excellent quality and is sold at the best possible price, to earn its place on our shelves.
‘We’ve really focused on innovation this year. We’ve launched several new wine ranges and added a premium Gin to our core range.
‘It’s great to see our offering is being praised so highly by industry bodies and consumers alike.’
